There are many complicated names for skin tags, such as cutaneous papilloma, acrochordon, or fibroepithelial polyp. What they really are is small tissue growths, that look like small flaps that hang from the skin on stalks, and happen in men and women to the same degree. They seem to start appearing in mid life, but can happen at any age if the conditions that cause them are the same. There are several ways to get rid of skin tags that have proven to be successful.

These tags can appear anywhere on the body, but more often turn up in the neck and armpit areas, or under the breast area or skin folds in obese women. Other areas that they are seen are on the eyelids, near the lash line, and folds of the groin or buttocks, anywhere dry skin can rub together, causing irritation.

The tags are usually quite small, approximately 5mm or less, but can grow to be much larger, such as the size of a large grape or 5cm. The texture can be wrinkly, but typically are smooth and usually the same color as your flesh. It's very rare to have one that turns out to be a malignant growth or something dangerous, but they are more of a nuisance than anything else, so doctors don't usually do anything about them, as they are harmless.

But if your doctor feels it could be something to biopsy or remove, there are different ways that he or she can do that. Sometimes Lidocaine is injected to the area to numb the skin before removal, and the doctor may just snip it off at the base. This can sometimes cause bleeding that may require pressure with gauze or a cotton ball, but in general is with little or no pain.

Another way your doctor could remove these irritations, especially if you have a lot of them, is to use liquid nitrogen to freeze them off. This method uses a very cold gas to essentially burn them off painlessly, but like other methods, these can be permanent or they can return again. There is no real understanding of what causes them to begin with, so permanent removal is questionable at best.

Another way your doctor may opt to try is using a device called a Hyfrecator, which uses electricity to burn the tissue and cauterize or seal it off to avoid bleeding. It is relatively painless and quick, not usually requiring any type of anesthesia.

Sometimes you won't have to do anything to get rid of skin tags; they will fall off on their own, from more rubbing or friction and you may not even know it's gone, or you may inadvertently remove them when shaving.

But the best way recommended if you want to get rid of skin tags at home is to tightly tie a piece of dental floss or string at the base of the stalk. Leave it for a few days, or however long it takes for the tag to dry up and fall off. Of course, you can still use sharp scissors and snip it off yourself, but that requires a steady hand and strong stomach.
